Pony rides, hiking and a lovely kiddies playground awaits you. Why not take the tar road there and the dirt road back for two very different experiences. The drive is about 40 minutes to an hour each way.

Sight Seeing
– Wakkerstroom is home to the largest population of threatened bird species in South Africa, and one of South Africa’s premier birding locations.
Other species that can be seen include Rudd’s Lark, Botha’s Lark, Yellow-breasted Pipit, Blue Korhaan, Southern Bald Ibis and all 5 species of Harrier bird found in South Africa.
Day Trips
–Ossewakop (“Ox Wagon Hill”) looms above the small Mpumalanga town of Wakkerstroom on its eastern side, the peak approximately 400 metres higher than the settlement. It is impossible to miss, as some enterprising residents have created the large outline of a Voortrekker wagon and the dates “1838 – 1938” (to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Great Trek) with whitewashed rocks on the slopes just below the summit. The route up the mountain is difficult and torturous, so please read the cautionary notes before embarking on this trip. The remarkable views over the town and its surrounds from the beacon on top of the mountain certainly make the effort to get up there worthwhile.
Adventure
– Mud, water and extreme adventure. Bakkies and off-road bikes can push their limits in this unfilled track of mud.
Bars
– Owl & Hare offers a wide variety of craft beer with unique dishes. The Bar itself is a sight to be seen with out o this world funky decorations.
Historical Landmarks
– A little away of from the main route you will find the cemetery and this memorial site dedicated to British soldiers who died in battle during the Anglo Boer War, sad also is to note the mentioning of drowning amongst the soldiers. Quiet place and being close to the bird sanctuary you can hear bird song and experience stillness as only sites of this kind can provide.
